Policing services partner with public and school libraries, and other agencies where children can be reached, such as health clinics and women's shelters, to promote literacy. The police act as the "bridge" between the community and the library by raising community support for library programs and activities designed to foster reading for pleasure and lifelong learning.

According to the National Literacy Secretariat: About 22 percent of adult Canadians over the age of 16 are in the lowest level of literacy ~65 percent of Canadians entering prison for the first time cannot read or write well ~ Literacy training can help youth at risk to make more choices about their future.

Truro Police Service and the RCMP are partnering with the Colchester-East Hants Public Library to encourage children and youth to read and visit their local library in Elmsdale ~ Mount Uniacke ~ Stewiacke ~ Tatamagouche ~ Truro.
